Peak Terskol Observatory

Trail run to Peak Terskol Observatory and Ice Base
This is a classic and one of the most popular routes for acclimatization before climbing Elbrus from the south. It is simple and follows paths exclusively. Enjoyable trekking with great views.
The route is memorable for its contrast. It starts on a trail surrounded by bright green vegetation, then leads past volcanic rocks. Nearing the observatory, you get panoramic views, and at the ice base, the landscape turns harsh: volcanic scree, glaciers, snow, and overcast skies.
Key landmarks along the way are Devichi Kosy Waterfall, the International Astronomical Peak Terskol Observatory, and the Ice Base.
Notes
- Take the shortcut trail instead of the dirt road near the start; it is significantly shorter.
- Observe the unique porous texture of volcanic rock formations along the way.
- There is a great viewpoint near the observatory with panoramas of the Main Caucasian Range.
- The Ice Base offers a "classic" view of Mount Elbrus.
